Is Your Skin Questioning The Weather?

Sep 16, 2011 by

Mine sure is. Temperatures in the 90 – 95 degree range last week, rain a few days ago, cold (actually cool, but we Louisianian’s are wimps when it comes to cool/cold weather) weather set in yesterday and is staying put through the weekend. Great weather for the “big” game on Saturday afternoon.  By mid week it will be in the 90′s again. So, I have no clue what to wear when and my skin has already taken noticed.

Quick Tips To Sooth Questioning Skin.

  • Use cuticle cream every morning and night.
  • If the temp falls below 45 wear a pair of gloves.
  • Exfoliate body two to three times a week.
  • Exfoliate face skin twice a week.
  • Exfoliate lower arms and hands three times a week.
  • If you find your skin itching a lot, look for a body lotion that will sooth skin in addition to moisturizing.
  • Add a humidifier to your bedroom.
  • Change to a clear and allergy & fragrance free free laundry detergent.
  • Use rubber gloves for doing the dishes.
  • When applying fragrance, spray it directly in front of you and walk through it, instead of applying it directly to your skin.
  • If you are itching in places your fingertips touch a lot, change to a clear, french, white, beige or flesh tone polish. Colored nail polishes are the single largest reason for itchy skin.
  • Use cooler bath or shower water.
  • Shower or bathe at night instead of in the morning (especially as the weather gets colder).

Fall Skin Care

Sep 5, 2011 by

Labor Day Weekend…what’s not to love?  A lot of people spend the weekend relaxing and having fun with family and friends.  It is the official end of summer so that means changing over our wardrobes from shorts, tees, flirty skirts,  flip-flops and, bathing suits to their cold weather cousins.  One words comes to mine for me – itching. Okay, make that two words…skin itching!

Second thing that happens is,  I look into the mirror one morning and after screaming, ask myself  “whose face is that and where did all those lines come from”?

I don’t know about you, but those two things are enough to send me straight into a post-summer-skin depression. I think the last week of August should be considered every woman’s personal week of skin renewal. WE should carve out at least one-hour every evening to pamper ourselves and get our skin ready for winter (in between cleaning and changing out closets, setting up school activities with the kids and cleaning the garage-again, so we can put the grill away. I know, I’m not being realistic, but try for once or twice a week.

Okay, I’ll admit, I don’t have children and my husband takes care of the house, grocery and cooking. I own a cosmetic’s and skin care company, do professional speaking and write. I’ll be the first to admit I don’t have a realistic view of how the average woman gets through an average week. I’m not sure I even know what an average week is. But I do know some great skin care tips to share with you for the winter months ahead.

The first thing most of us reach for when it comes to winter skin care is a moisturizer. A good choice, but it is not going to do a lot of good until you remove those dead skin cells from the surface of the skin.

Are you ready for some magic?

  • Grab the following items from the kitchen
  • Two plastic saucers, cups or containers
  • Pour ½ cup granulated sugar into one and ½ cup cooking or olive oil into the other one.
  •  Walk to the shower (ignoring the odd looks you are getting) and declare on the way – this is my 15-minutes of self-time.
  •  Pick up a large bath towel, a washcloth and a towel to wrap your hair in.  Oh, and don’t forget to pick up your favorite moisturizer, soap and/or bath gel.
  • Pull your hair up and wrap the towel around it and secure tightly

WITHOUT TURNING THE WATER ON – step carefully into the shower.

  •  Dip your fingertips into the oil and then into the sugar. Starting on your forehead, gently work your fingertips in a circular motion across the forehead and down one side of your face.
  • When you no longer notice the sugar on your skin, it is time to re-dip your fingertips in the oil and the sugar and start where you left off.
  •  Repeat until you reach your toes.
  •  For your back area, find an across body reach with your arms that is comfortable for you and repeat the process.  Truthfully, if your husband is at home, he will most likely be standing in the bathroom by now, so just ask him to do your back.
  •  Tip, sometimes it is easier to do your lower back using the topside of your hands. Try it first with nothing on your hands and if you feel it works better and is more comfortable you are good to go.  Just pour some oil on the backs of your hand and then pour the sugar over it, flip your hands over and rub over your lower back area.

Now it is time to set the oil and sugar aside (being careful not to spill what is left of the oil on the floor of the shower) and turn on the water. Rinse well from head to toe. Using a bath gel or your favorite soap, go over your body lightly with the washcloth and rinse well.

Step out of the shower and pat yourself dry. Apply moisturizer from head to toe and savor the caressing circular movements you will be using to apply it.

Feel the magic?

  •  Touch your skin and feel how soft it is. Look at your arms and hands and see how much younger they look now that those dead skin cells are no longer clinging on for dear life.

Reality check!

Sorry, but it is time to get back to your real life now. Oh, and you can smile about the way your skin feels all evening long. You can even send the kids to the neighbor’s house if you want!

You have done the basic sugar/oil scrub.

Want to jazz it up a bit? Try this combination of ingredients.

½ cup granulated sugar

½ cup extra virgin olive oil

1 tsp. lemon juice

3 to 5 drops of peppermint (or any other extract you like the scent of) essential oil

Combine all the ingredients into a paste consistency. Work onto and into the skin as described above.
